Today Belize is attempting to continue modernizing. Serious attempts at infrastructure began in the mid 20th century. Belize has an above average telecommunications system. It is considered one of the best in the region with a modern fiber-optics network with fax, paging, cellular and email capabilities. Internet access is 2-3 times the US rate in cost.

The country code (501) can be direct dialed around the world. Direct Daily flights are available from several airports in the United States including: Miami, New Orleans, or Houston. These flights arrive at Philip Goldson International Airport located at Belize City, the commercial capital. Flights take approximately two hours by air from the US to Belize.[1]

Previously the capital was Belize City, but was moved inland due to the harsh hurricane and flood season. Today Belize has a population of approximately 250,000. English is the official language. Other languages including Spanish, Mayan, Creole and Garifuna are widely spoken.
